The Football League Second Division 1988/89 was the 86th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 27, 1988 and ended on May 13, 1989.
Second division champions were Chelsea and also rose to second-placed Manchester City and, after play-off successes against Swindon Town and Blackburn Rovers , third-placed Crystal Palace to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams, the three first division clubs FC Middlesbrough , West Ham United and Newcastle United, ranked in the table below, took the places in the following second division season 1989/90 . Shrewsbury Town , Birmingham City and Walsall FC had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Wolverhampton Wanderers , runner-up Sheffield United and play-off winners Port Vale took the vacant positions in the following season 1989/90 .
