The Football League Second Division 1985/86 was the 83rd season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 17, 1985 and ended on May 8, 1986.

Second division champions were Norwich City and the second and third placed Charlton Athletic and FC Wimbledon also rose to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1986/87, the three first division clubs Ipswich Town , Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion ranked in the table below took the places. Carlisle United , Middlesbrough FC and Fulham FC had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Reading FC and the Plymouth Argyle and Derby County ranked behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1986/87 .
