The Football League Second Division 1978/79 was the 76th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 19, 1978 and ended on May 22, 1979.

Crystal Palace became second division champions and the second and third placed Brighton & Hove Albion and Stoke City also rose to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1979/80, the three first division clubs Queens Park Rangers , Birmingham City and Chelsea FC ranked in the table below took the places. Sheffield United , Millwall FC and Blackburn Rovers had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Shrewsbury Town and the FC Watford and Swansea City ranked behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1979/80 .
