The Football League First Division 1997/98 was the sixth season of the Football League First Division as only the second highest English football league and 95th second division season overall. It started on August 9, 1997 and ended on May 3, 1998.

Nottingham Forest became second division champions and also second-placed Middlesbrough FC rose directly to the Premier League . In addition, Charlton Athletic prevailed in the play-off games against Ipswich Town and in the final against AFC Sunderland and thus became the third promoted team. From the Premier League, the three in the table below Bolton Wanderers , FC Barnsley and Crystal Palace took the free places in the following second division season 1998/99 . From the First Division in the third-rate Football League Second Division dismount had Manchester City , Stoke City and Reading FC . Instead of the three clubs, the second division winners FC Watford and the Bristol City and play-off winners Grimsby Town behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1998/99 .
