The Football League Second Division 1956/57 was the 54th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 18, 1956 and ended on May 1, 1957.

Second division champions Leicester City and also the second-placed Nottingham Forest rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1957/58, the two first division clubs Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic, ranked in the table below, took the places. FC Bury and Port Vale had to relegate from the Second Division , with Bury now having to compete in the North Season Football League Third Division North and Port Vale in the Football League Third Division South . Instead of the two clubs took the free positions in the following season 1957/58 Third Division North champions Derby County and from the Third Division South the winner Ipswich Town .
