The Football League First Division 1998/99 was the seventh season of the Football League First Division as only the second highest English football league and 96th second division season overall. It started on August 8, 1998 and ended on May 9, 1999.

Second division champions were the AFC Sunderland and also the second-placed Bradford City rose directly to the Premier League . In addition, Watford FC prevailed in the play-off games against Birmingham City and in the final against Bolton Wanderers and thus became the third promoted team. From the Premier League in the following second division season 1999/2000, the three in the table below Charlton Athletic , Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest took the free places. FC Bury , Oxford United and Bristol City had to relegate from the First Division to the third-tier Football League Second Division . Instead of the three clubs, the second division winners FC Fulham and behind them FC Walsall and play-off winners Manchester City took the vacant positions in the following season 1999/2000 .
