Football League First Division

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Football League First Division was the top division in English football from the 1892/93 season to 1991/92 . In the first four seasons from 1888/89 to 1891/92 , the top tier was initially simply called the Football League . In 1992 it was replaced by the Premier League as the top tier and under the same name for the second division .

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, the Football League Championship was introduced as the successor class (second division) to the First Division, which has since been the third highest class in English football under the new official name Football League One .

societies

24 clubs took part in the First Division. At the end of each season, the two highest-ranked clubs in the table rose to the Premier League with the winner of the play-offs , determined between the clubs that had finished the season between third and sixth place. They were replaced by the three clubs placed at the bottom of the table in the Premier League. The clubs that finished 22nd to 24th in the First Division were relegated to the Second Division on the same principle and were replaced by the two winners of the Second Division and the playoff winner.
