Football League First Division 1975/76

The Football League First Division 1976/77 was the 78th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 21, 1976 and ended on May 24, 1977. Since this season, if there is a tie, the goal difference decides on the placement.

The Liverpool defense with a point ahead of Manchester City the title and won his tenth English league. Of the three newcomers, West Bromwich Albion , Bristol City and Sunderland AFC , only the latter could not hold the class and had to move into the second division alongside Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspur . These three clubs were replaced in the following season by newly promoted Nottingham Forest , Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea FC .

A total of 457 players were used, with Liverpool FC having the fewest with 17 and AFC Sunderland having the most players in league games with 30. 91 newcomers were opposed to 82 footballers who last came into play in the 1976/77 season. 35 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

Game of Shame

On the last day of the match, AFC Sunderland, Bristol City , Coventry City and Stoke City were threatened with relegation ( Spurs , who, unlike the competition, had no catch-up games, were relegated despite a 2-0 win at Leicester City ). Stoke was the first of the four remaining teams to play and lost to Aston Villa on May 16 . Three days later, the Everton vs. Sunderland and Coventry vs. Bristol scheduled at the same time. Coventry manager Jimmy Hill delayed the kick-off of the latter game by 15 minutes, ostensibly to let stuck fans into the stadium before kick-off. Sunderland lost at Everton, so it was clear before the end of the game in Coventry that a draw in Coventry would be enough to stay first class. Hill made sure that this was announced at the stadium when the score was 2-2. Then Bristol goalkeeper John Shaw and Bristol defenders matched each other in the final five minutes without a Coventry player attacking them. Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins mentions this match in his documentary Nice Guys Finish First as an example of altruism for one's own purpose. The game caused lasting damage to the reputation of Jimmy Hill among Sunderland fans: Hill had to be led out of a game in Craven Cottage with police protection in 2008 after Sunderland fans spotted him and he answered their insults with air kisses.

The championship team of Liverpool FC

The following table lists all players who played in a league game for Liverpool FC during the 1976/77 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
