Football League First Division 1979/80

The Football League First Division 1980/81 was the 82nd season of the highest English football league . It began on August 16, 1980 and ended on May 19, 1981 and was the last season in which only two instead of three points were awarded for a win.

Aston Villa won its seventh championship four points ahead of Ipswich Town . Of the three promoted teams, Birmingham City , Sunderland AFC and Leicester City , only Leicester could not keep the class and had to return to the Second Division after only one year . In addition, Norwich City and Crystal Palace descended. These three clubs should be replaced in the following season by the three second division promoted Swansea City , West Ham United and Notts County .

A total of 488 players were used, with Aston Villa with 14 the fewest and Crystal Palace with 28 the most players in league games. 99 newcomers were opposed to 104 footballers who last came into play in the 1980/81 season. 29 players were able to play all 42 league games in their club.

    The Aston Villa championship team

The following table lists all players who played for Aston Villa in a league game during the 1980/81 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets. With the use of only 14 players in the season Aston Villa created a record. So few players have never been used before.
