Premier League 2007/08

The Premier League 2008/09 was the 17th season of the English Premier League , and at the same time the 110th first division season in English football. It started on August 16, 2008 and ended on May 24, 2009. The defending champions were Manchester United , after this club had won their tenth Premiership title and the 17th English championship trophy in the previous season. The first goal of the 2008/09 season scored Samir Nasri from Arsenal FC in the opening game against newly promoted and second division champions West Bromwich Albion .

With a 0-0 win against Arsenal, Manchester United was able to celebrate their successful title defense on the penultimate matchday. Alex Ferguson's team won the third English championship in a row and, with a total of 18 titles, overtook Liverpool FC, the only record champions up until then .

Season course

Championship decision

The team balance of Manchester United was due to the renewed championship title. Based on a strong central defense with Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand as well as with the help of the "goalkeeper dinosaur" Edwin van der Sar , who did not concede a goal in 21 league games, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in particular ensured the necessary stability and in the midfield Attack Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney alongside the new record player Ryan Giggs for the decisive creative moments in the 2008/09 season.

Liverpool FC had long hopes of their first league title in 19 years with leading players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres , celebrated a respectable success with the 4-1 win at Old Trafford , but lost crucial points due to the excessive number of eleven draws in the championship race. Both Chelsea FC under the new coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and the young Arsenal team from the “Big Four” of English football were slow to keep up and even ran the risk of losing their qualification for the lucrative Champions League. While Arsenal FC experienced a high phase at the beginning of the season and later suffered from the fact that there was too little substance in the defense center and in the creative zone next to Cesc Fàbregas in midfield, the "blues" only solidified after the coach change to Guus Hiddink towards the end of the season.

Aston Villa ranked fourth for a long time and, with the fast Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor, had effective offensive forces in the fight for a Champions League place. In the end, however, after a weakness in form, the “Villans” fell behind and behind Everton FC , whose own ambitions were in turn “slowed down” by injury problems. Behind them, the 61-year-old Roy Hodgson trained FC Fulham for the new Europa League and, especially in the eight games on the opposing side without conceding a goal, showed itself to be very defensive.

midfield

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were able to book eighth and ninth place in the final table as a success. The "Spurs" had to cope with a disastrous beginning and then started a race to catch up under the new coach Harry Redknapp ; The problems of West Ham United against the background of the financial crisis with regard to Icelandic ownership were of an economic nature, which under coach Gianfranco Zola did not show any clear sporting effects. The top half of the table was completed by Manchester City , which this season could not convert the high transfer expenses - including Robinho, the most expensive purchase of an English professional club to date - into football quality and disappointed with only two wins, especially on foreign courses.

Wigan Athletic and newly promoted Stoke City landed in the no man's land of the Premier League , with the "Latics" fighting for a long time to qualify for a European club competition and losing ground significantly in the last two months. Stoke was extremely strong, was difficult to defeat in home games and surprisingly distanced themselves from the relegation ranks.

The Bolton Wanderers , Portsmouth FC and Blackburn Rovers collected 41 points . In Bolton Kevin Davies was again with eleven goals a central player in one of the smallest squads in the English top division, who was able to defy the austerity constraints in the club. For a long time, Portsmouth FC, active in the UEFA Cup , could not compensate for the departure of Harry Redknapp, maneuvered themselves into a downward spiral under successor Tony Adams and then scored important points again in the last home games under third coach Paul Hart . Premier League novice Paul Ince had to pay the hardship at ex-champion Blackburn , who was replaced halfway and in penultimate position by routine coach Sam Allardyce , who finally managed to turn the trend for the better.

Relegation battle

Behind Sunderland AFC , who dismissed their coach halfway with Roy Keane - like a total of six clubs in this table region - Hull City was also only just able to escape relegation. Hull City had attracted attention in the preliminary round with some sensations, defeating Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur and taking second place for a few weeks. Later it went downhill in a nosedive and the team of trainer Phil Brown saved themselves with only one point behind the finish.

The way to the second-rate Football League Championship had to Newcastle United , the Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion take. While four coaches in Newcastle, including former player legend Alan Shearer , were “worn out” in a turbulent season, the deficits in Middlesbrough were mainly in the offensive game. The team of Gareth Southgate scored only 28 goals. Bottom of the table was with the most goals conceded "WBA", which was relegated to the second division for the third time in the four Premier League seasons of the 2000s.
