Stephen Roger "Steve" Bruce (born December 31, 1960 in Corbridge ) is a former English football player and coach . He is the head coach of Newcastle United .

Career

Player career

The defensive player began his football career in the summer of 1977 at Gillingham FC . Bruce joined the first team in 1978 and played there until 1984.

That year he moved to Norwich City for a fee of around £ 125,000 to £ 135,000 . On his debut for the Canaries, he scored an own goal against Liverpool . In 1985 he won his first title, the English League Cup, with Norwich City and was relegated with the Canaries in the same year. After the immediate rise in 1986 and the 1986/87 season, he moved to Manchester United in December 1987 .

The club paid £ 800,000 to £ 825,000 for the Englishman. Despite moving to Manchester , he was inducted into the Norwich City Players Hall of Fame in 2002. Bruce made his debut for the Red Devils on December 19, 1987 against Portsmouth FC . With them, the defender was three times English champions (1993, 1994 and 1996), twice English cup winners (1990, 1994), one time English League Cup winner (1991) and won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. In 1991 he was captain of the team and This remained until he moved to Birmingham City in 1996.

After two years in Birmingham , Steve Bruce ended his playing career with Sheffield United in 1998 and 1999 .

Coaching career

At the end of the 1998/99 season Bruce was already player-coach at Sheffield United. In 1999 and 2000 he was the coach of Huddersfield Town . In 2001 Bruce coached two teams: Wigan Athletic and Crystal Palace .

He has been the coach of Birmingham City since 2001 , relegated with City in 2006 and achieved immediate promotion in 2007.

In November 2007 Steve Bruce became the new coach of the English club Wigan Athletic.

On June 3, 2009, he signed a new contract with Sunderland AFC . From 2009 to 2011 he led the team of the so-called Black Cats and always achieved placements in the midfield of the Premier League. On November 30, 2011 Bruce was relieved of his duties due to continued athletic failure at Sunderland AFC.

On June 8, 2012, he took over the coaching position at the English second division club Hull City and signed a three-year contract. At the end of July 2016 Bruce resigned from his coaching position by "mutual agreement". The background should be the lack of clarity about the future direction of the club.

In October 2016, he was signed by Aston Villa , which had recently been relegated from the Premier League and had made a false start in the second division. In the 2017/18 season Bruce led the club into the promotion play-offs, but failed there after a semi-final victory against Middlesbrough FC with 1-0 in the final at London's Wembley Stadium at Fulham FC . After just one win from the previous nine league games and lying in 12th place in the table, Bruce was dismissed in early October 2018. In his last game, a 3-3 draw against bottom of the table Preston North End , he was pelted by a spectator with a head of lettuce before the start of the game.

In early January Bruce was introduced as the future head coach of the English second division club Sheffield Wednesday . He will take over as head coach from his interim assistant coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence in February 2019, making him only the second coach besides Danny Wilson , who was head coach at both Sheffield professional clubs.

He resigned from his post during the 2019 season break after speculation arose that linked him to the Newcastle United coaching position . On July 17, 2019, Newcastle introduced him as the new head coach, Bruce received a three-year contract.
