Fabian Lukas Schär (born December 20, 1991 in Wil SG ) is a Swiss football player who has been under contract with Newcastle United since summer 2018 .

Career

society

Schär played in his youth with the youth clubs of FC Wil . He made his debut in the Challenge League at the age of 17 on November 29, 2009 against Stade Nyonnais (0-0). He scored his first goal on October 30, 2010 against Yverdon-Sport . At FC Wil he was called up 52 times and scored nine goals as a central defender.

FC Basel

On July 4, 2012, FC Basel signed Schär. He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015 with a one-year option. He made his Super League debut for FC Basel on September 29, 2012 at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in a 1-1 draw against FC Lausanne-Sport . He scored his first goal in a competitive game with a header in a 3-2 home win against Servette on October 7, 2012 after a corner from Fabian Frei .

At the end of the 2012/13 season , Schär became Swiss champions with FC Basel and was in the final of the Swiss Cup , which they lost in the penalty shootout . In the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League he advanced to the semi-finals with FC Basel, where he was eliminated from the reigning UEFA Champions League winners FC Chelsea with an aggregate result of 2: 5.

The 2013/14 season was very successful for Basel. The team finished the football championship 2013/14 as Swiss champions and was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. Basel's Champions League season ended after the group stage, but in the Europa League it advanced to the quarter-finals. Schär had a total of 35 appearances under coach Murat Yakin , including 22 in the Super League, 1 in the Cup, 10 in the Champions and 2 in the Europa League. He scored 6 goals (4 championship, 2 Champions League).

The 2014/15 season was also very successful for Schär and FCB. The team finished the football championship 2014/15 for the 18th time as champions (for the 6th time in a row) with 12 points ahead of the runner-up BSC Young Boys . Schär became Swiss champions for the third time in a row. Basel was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost to FC Sion 0: 3. In the 2014/15 Champions League season , Basel advanced to the round of 16. Under the new coach Paulo Sousa , Schär had a total of 41 appearances, 30 of them in the Super League, 4 in the Cup and 7 in the Champions League. He scored a goal in the Super League.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

In the 2015/16 season Schär played for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga ; he signed a four-year contract and was given the number 5 on his back in Kraichgau. FC Basel and TSG Hoffenheim agreed not to disclose the transfer fee. In the 2-1 win against Hertha BSC on April 16, 2016, the 30th matchday of the 2015/16 season, he scored his first and only Bundesliga goal with his head.

Deportivo La Coruña

Schär has been playing for Deportivo La Coruña in the Spanish Primera División since the 2017/18 season ; he signed a four-year contract and was given the number 24. The parties agreed not to disclose the amount of the bill. However, it was later revealed that it was three million euros.

Newcastle United

In 2018 he moved to Newcastle United in England for four million euros . In the beginning he didn't play a big role. From the 11th game day, however, he was set in central defense. This initially continued in 2019/20 . Towards the end of the season, however, mostly short assignments followed.

National team

Schär played his first international match in Switzerland's U-19s on February 29, 2012. The team lost 2-0 to the U-19s from Austria . He played in the Swiss national team at the 2012 Olympic Games .

On August 14, 2013 Schär was appointed to the national team for the first time against Brazil . Switzerland won 1-0 through an own goal by Dani Alves .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. In the opening game against Albania , he scored the first tournament goal for Switzerland after just a few minutes with a header from a corner, which remained the decisive goal of the game. He was one of the players who played all tournament games over the full playing time. In the round of 16 he was one of the successful shooters in the final penalty shoot-out, which nevertheless ended 4: 5 and brought the tournament to the end for the team.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was part of the Swiss squad . He came to three missions and was eliminated with the team in the second round.
