The 89th Swiss Cup was held from August 14, 2013 to April 21, 2014. The defending champion was the Grasshopper Club Zurich . In the final, FC Zurich was able to secure their eighth title with a 2-0 after extra time against last year's finalists FC Basel .
The mode
Ten clubs in the Raiffeisen Super League and 9 clubs in the Brack.ch Challenge League qualified directly for the Swiss Cup. In addition, 21 clubs from the 1st league (10 from Promotion and 11 from Classic ), 10 clubs from the 2nd interregional league and 14 clubs from the amateur leagues joined them. They had to qualify for the Swiss Cup in regional competitions.
FC Vaduz from the Challenge League was not eligible to play , as this club takes part in the Liechtenstein Cup , as were the U21 teams from the 1st division promotion . Furthermore, all other reserve teams were also excluded from the cup. If a second team wins a regional cup, the first team advances. If the first team is already qualified, the starting place goes to the finalists of the regional cup.
It was played in a knockout system. Each round must normally take place within a maximum of two days. The venue for the final was Bern.
1/32 finals (August 14, 17 and 18, 2013): 64 teams, the winners qualify for the 1/16 finals.
1/16 finals (14/15 September 2013): 32 teams, the winners qualify for the round of 16.
Round of 16 (November 9, 10 and 14, 2013): 16 teams, the winners qualify for the quarter-finals.
Quarter-finals (December 4, 2013, February 5, 2014): 8 teams, the winners are qualified for the semi-finals.
Semi-finals (March 26, 2014): 4 teams, the winners qualify for the final.
Final (April 21, 2014, Easter Monday): The winner wins the 89th Swiss Cup.

Tournament summary
In the first round , three top division teams already expressed difficulties with their opponents. The Grasshopper Club Zurich sat as reigning cup winner against third-tier SC Kriens on a tight 1: 0 by. FC Sion , who only won 3-1 in extra time against fourth-rate FC Sursee , and Swiss champions FC Basel , who won 1-0 in extra time against BSC Old Boys Basel in the city derby , had even more struggles .
Three clubs in the second highest league, the Brack.ch Challenge League , did not survive the first round. The FC Wil difference against the third-tier FC Le Mont 1: 4 from the FC Winterthur flew through a 4: 5 after penalty shootout against the also in the 1. Liga Promotion gambling SC Brühl from the competition, the FC Chiasso was eliminated by the fourth-rate US Terre Sainte with 1: 2. FC Locarno had trouble against fifth-rate FC Ascona; In the Ticino canton derby, the upper class won 2-1 after extra time.
In the second round , FC Schaffhausen failed as a second division team at SC Brühl St. Gallen 2: 3. With FC Locarno (0: 3 against FC Thun ), FC Lugano (1: 3 against FC St. Gallen ), FC Wohlen (0: 1 against FC Sion ) and Servette FC Genève (0: 1 against the FC Lausanne-Sport ) all four second division clubs lost the duel against the upper class. As the only club in the second division, FC Biel-Bienne prevailed against FC Bavois from the fourth-class 1st League Classic.
The round of 16 began with the only fourth-rate club that was still in competition. The FC Baden went against FC Zurich while even in the lead, lost but ultimately clear with 1: 4. With the same result, the second city of Zurich club also prevailed, the Grasshopper Club Zurich won away against third-class FC Köniz . The SC Brühl St. Gallen from the third division, the first division promotion, fought against FC Lausanne-Sport for a long time at eye level, but lost 3-0 in total due to two late goals.
The biggest sensation was achieved by third-class FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne , who eliminated the BSC Young Boys 4-1 and thus threw the first division out of the competition. The FC Basel won against the also third-rate FC Tuggen with 3: 1. The game between FC Biel-Bienne and FC Thun had to be postponed due to unplayable terrain. The upper-class FC Thun was able to win the supplementary game just 1-0 after extra time.
In the quarter-finals , the defending champions, the Grasshoppers , failed against league rivals FC Thun 3: 4 after a penalty shoot-out. Previously, the game ended goalless after regular time and extra time. The FC Luzern won his match against FC Lausanne-Sport with 2: 0, thus joining just before the semifinal, as well as the FC Zurich , which the FC St. Gallen away with 1: 0 defeated. The game between the surprise team FC Le Mont-sur-Lausanne from the 1st division promotion and Swiss champions FC Basel had to be postponed due to unplayable terrain and was rescheduled for February 5, 2014. In addition, the teams exchanged home rights, the game was played in Basel's St. Jakob-Park , with FC Le Mont as the “host”. The game ended 6-1 for Basel.
In the semi-finals , FC Basel beat FC Luzern 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Davide Callà , who had played for FC Aarau in the autumn. In the second encounter, there were no goals between FC Zurich and FC Thun for 120 minutes, which is why the penalty shoot-out had to decide. The first attempt by Thun's Christian Schneuwly failed, after which all shooters met, which means that FC Zurich moved into the final against FC Basel.
In the final , FC Zurich and FC Basel were largely able to neutralize each other in the first half. Until Basel's Gastón Sauro saw the red card for an emergency brake in the 66th minute , both teams still had some chances. While FC Zurich then largely pushed FC Basel back on the defensive, the Basel team nonetheless drove some dangerous counterattacks. In the 82nd minute, a long-range shot from Zurich's Davide Chiumiento hit the crossbar. In the first half of extra time, there was a controversial scene in the 99th minute in which Basel's Giovanni Sio was sent off with a yellow-red card after an alleged swallow in the opponent's penalty area. In return, Mario Gavranović used a cross from Jorge Teixeira to lead Zurich. As a result, the nine players from Basel were no longer able to react. Yassine Chikhaoui played a decisive role in the 2-0 win by Gavranović in the 114th minute . With the win, FC Zurich was also able to win the fourth duel in the cup final against FC Basel. Overall, it was the eighth title in nine finals. The last cup victory was won by FC Zurich in 2005.
