The FC Sursee is a Swiss football club from the city of Sursee . The club was founded on July 1, 1920 and will play in the 2nd interregional league , the fifth highest Swiss league , in the 2019/20 season .

history

On July 1, 1920, FC Sursee was founded by a few young men. In the beginning, the team played on a field in Moosgasse, which was later supplemented with a wooden stand.

FC Sursee experienced its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s. He played in the 1st and 2nd league and was able to host top-class teams such as Lucerne and St. Gallen in the Swiss Cup .

In 1988 the move from the old Neufeld stadium to the new Schlottermilch stadium took place. At the same time, FC Sursee was relegated to the second division. A season later, under the coach Fidé Fässler, he was immediately promoted again.

In 1991, Alfred “Charly” Herberth took over the coaching position. With him, FC Sursee reached the most successful sporting period.

In the 1992/93 season, FC Sursee qualified for the ascension games in the then National League B . Red Star Zurich could be defeated in the first round. In the decisive second round, FC Sursee had to play against FC Renens , with the then coach Gabet Chapuisat . Sursee won 2-1 away. In the second leg at home in front of a record crowd of 2800 spectators and under pouring rain, neither of the two teams could score a goal, which was enough for FC Sursee to climb up to the second highest league in Switzerland for the first time.

A year later, FC Sursee was relegated to the first division again. In March 1995 Sursee reached a new stadium record of 3,200 spectators when the Grasshoppers, under coach Christian Gross, defeated Sursee 2-0 in the Cup.

Under the coaches Franz Bucher (1995–1997) and André Fimian (1997–2000), FC Sursee was in the first division. In 2001 he had to relegate to the newly created 2nd league inter. There Sursee positioned itself in the middle of the table until the former Aargau professional Sven Christ took over as coach in the 2008/09 season . Under Sven Christ, the team fought for promotion to the first division, but failed two rounds to go and finished second in what was then Group 3 of the second interregional division. After an average season 2009/10, which ended in midfield, FC Sursee played for promotion again in the 2010/11 season. Under 19-time Swiss national player Stefan Marini , the team was able to defend first place in the table in the first half of the season and fought head-to-head with FC Muri in the second half of the season for exit. Due to the calendar, the game between FC Sursee and FC Muri was the last of the season. FC Muri managed to get promoted because the 1-1 final result was enough for them to defend a point ahead. In the 2012/13 season, FC Sursee rose to the 1st league classic under coach Stefan Marini. After the rise, Heiri Eggerschwiler took over the coaching position. In the first main round of the Swiss Cup 2013/14, FC Sursee brought FC Sion from the Super League to the verge of defeat and only lost in extra time.

In the 2015/16 season, FC Sursee was relegated from the first division . But since FC Biel-Bienne had to file for bankruptcy, Sursee remained as the best second from bottom of all three groups in the first division . The second team made it to the 3rd division in 2016.

In the 2016/17 season, after the preliminary round, FC Sursee was on the last place in the table in the 1st league classic, group 2. Remarkable: 13 games resulted in 10 defeats, all of which ended with a goal difference. On November 24, 2016, FC Sursee announced that coach Marc Fiechter was resigning from the club with immediate effect. The former Sursee player André Grüter (most recently coach at FC Buttisholz and head of sports at FC Schötz) was signed as the new coach. With the new coach, FC Sursee managed to stay in the league.

In the 2017/18 season, 31 teams took part in the competitions of the Swiss Football Association. The first team of FC Sursee finished the season in 13th place and was relegated to the lower 2nd division interregionally. After a few laps, coach André Grüter switched to FC Schötz during the current championship. The previous player Pascal Bader was used as his successor. In the 2019/20 season, FC Sursee qualified for the 1/16 finals of the Swiss Cup, in which they were eliminated from the first division club FC Bulle (1: 2 defeat).
