Christian Gross [ groːs ] (born August 14, 1954 in Zurich ) is a Swiss football coach and former football player .

As a coach, he won a total of eight championships and five times the Swiss Cup with Grasshopper Club Zurich and FC Basel between 1994 and 2008. Gross, who also worked for VfB Stuttgart , Tottenham Hotspur and BSC Young Boys , won the Prince Cup with Al Ahli (Saudi Arabia) in 2015 and the double with the championship and the Kings Cup in 2016. With Zamalek (Egypt) he started in 2018 by winning the Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup and triumphed by winning the African Confederation Cup 2019. In 32 years, a total of 16 titles came together.

In May 2020, he announced his retirement from active coaching on SRF and a realignment for coaching advice through his company Teamtalk GmbH, in cooperation with SBE Management AG from Philip Degen.

Career as a player

Gross, the son of a police officer, began his playing career at the Grasshopper Club Zurich , which he left in 1975. After three years at Lausanne Sports and two seasons in the Neuchâtel Xamax jersey , he moved to the German Bundesliga for VfL Bochum in 1980 . Gross played 29 Bundesliga games for Bochum, scoring four goals. He returned to Switzerland and played four more seasons for FC St. Gallen and three seasons for FC Lugano . Gross completed an international match for Switzerland.

Career as a coach

In 1988 Gross went to FC Wil , where he worked as a player-coach in the fourth-highest division, the 2nd division . During his tenure (1988 to 1993), the Wiler and Gross rose in one go via the 1st division to the National League B (today: Challenge League ).

Grasshopper Club Zurich and Tottenham

In 1993, Gross moved to Grasshopper Club Zurich, with whom he was twice champion (1995 and 1996) and twice qualified for the Champions League . On November 24, 1997 he was coach of the relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur in London . Although he had saved Tottenham from relegation with only one defeat in the last nine league games, he was sacked after three games the following season.

FC Basel

Gross was the coach of FC Basel from July 1, 1999 until the end of the 2008/09 season , which he led to its first championship title since 1980 in three years. Previously, FC Basel had moved into the final of the UI Cup under Gross . In 2002 and 2008 Gross qualified for the Champions League with FC Basel. In 2004, 2005 and 2008, FC Basel won the second, third and fourth championship titles under Gross. In 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008 he won the Swiss Cup (Swisscom Cup) with FCB .

FC Basel and Gross dissolved their contract at the end of the 2008/09 season.

VfB Stuttgart

On December 6, 2009, Gross was coach of VfB Stuttgart , with whom he signed a contract that was limited to June 2011; he replaced Markus Babbel . Gross was able to stabilize VfB, which was in 15th place at the time when he took over as coach, and bring it back to sixth place in the table by the end of the 2009/10 season - the club qualified for the UEFA Europa League . Gross had the best points average of all Bundesliga coaches this season with 2.26 points per game. After a disappointing start to the 2010/11 season - six defeats in seven games and last place in the table - he was released from his duties as coach of VfB Stuttgart on October 13, 2010. His successor was his previous assistant coach, Jens Keller .

BSC Young Boys

During the summer break of 2011, the Berner Sport Club signed Young Boys Gross to replace Vladimir Petković for the 2011/12 season. He was released on April 29, 2012, even though he had won 16 points in the last 9 championship games and was in 3rd position in the championship with YB.

Al-Ahli SFC

From July 2014 onwards, Gross worked for two years as the successor to the Portuguese Vítor Pereira as coach at al-Ahli in the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah . With the club he won the Crown Prince's Cup in 2015 and the King's Cup and the state championship in 2016. In person, he was named Trainer of the Year 2016. In mid-2016 he was succeeded by another Portuguese in the form of José Manuel Gomes . After his dismissal, Gross took over as coach again in November 2016. Despite renewed successes - including qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Arab Champions League - Gross resigned from his position at the end of the season, as he could not agree on a contract extension with the club.

Zamalek SC

In April 2018, Gross negotiated a contract with Zamalek SC in Cairo , but due to inconsistencies, Gross did not sign the contract, contrary to false reports in the press. In July 2018, Gross signed a one-year contract at the second attempt and became a coach at the second most successful club in Egypt. On October 6, 2018 he won the Saudi-Egyptian Super Cup against Al Hilal (Saudi), and in May 2019 Gross and his team won the African Confederation Cup, the second highest club competition in Africa. The Egyptians won against Renaissance de Berkane from Morocco 5: 3 n.P. He was also named coach of the year 2019 in Egypt. On June 1st the contract with Zamalek expires, although the last 4 games of the championship were postponed beyond the official end of the season, the contract with Gross was not extended. At this point his team was 7 points behind the leader, who had played two more games.

For the third time at Al-Ahli SFC

In October 2019 he returned to al-Ahli as a trainer. Even though he qualified for the Asian CL and led the club to the semi-finals of the King Cup, he was released on February 21, 2020 after a change of president and management. Gross had won 12 of 18 games and the club was 3rd in the championship.
