Heiko Vogel (born November 21, 1975 in Bad Dürkheim ) is a German football coach . Working mainly in the youth field and as an assistant coach, he was able to win two national titles as head coach of FC Basel and also took part in the Champions League with the club . From April to September 2019 he was the head coach of the third division club KFC Uerdingen 05 . From July 2020 he will take over the regional league team from Borussia Mönchengladbach .

Player career

Vogel grew up in Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse and played football for the local clubs TuS Wachenheim and FC 08 Haßloch in his youth . Later he was active at SV Edenkoben in the regional soccer league West / Southwest , the third highest division at the time.

Coaching career

FC Bayern Munich

After Vogel had given up his ambitions for a career as a professional footballer due to an ankle injury at the age of 20, he studied sports science at the Technical University of Munich . In 1998, after successfully completing his studies, Vogel initially applied unsuccessfully to TSV 1860 Munich for a position as a trainer. A lecturer he got a contact to Bayern Munich and was first assistant coach of Hermann Hummels at youth level of Bayern. He later coached various youth teams there himself (U10, U13, U15 and U17). Here he looked after players like the later professionals Philipp Lahm , Diego Contento , Mehmet Ekici , Mats Hummels and Thomas Müller . Parallel to his activities as a youth trainer in Munich, Vogel completed an apprenticeship as a soccer teacher at the Cologne Sports University by 2004 .

FC Ingolstadt 04

When Thorsten Fink became the head coach of FC Ingolstadt 04 in the then third-class regional league in January 2008 , he brought Vogel, with whom he had been on good terms since training together at the Sport University in Cologne, as his assistant coach to Ingolstadt. In the summer of 2008, the coaching duo rose to the 2nd Bundesliga with Ingolstadt.

FC Basel

In the summer of 2009, Fink went to FC Basel as the new head coach, taking Vogel to Switzerland as an assistant coach. Vogel signed a three-year contract there, which was prematurely extended by one year in October 2010.

When Thorsten Fink from Hamburger SV was bought out of the contract with Basel in mid-October 2011 , Heiko Vogel was appointed head coach for the first two months on an interim basis. At the same time, the contract with Vogel was prematurely extended for another year to 2014. The first three games, the bird served as head coach, were in the Swiss Cup , a 5: 1 away win against third-tier FC Schötz , in the Champions League group C a 0: 2 defeat at home to Benfica and in the league a 1: 0 away win at FC Zurich . On December 7, 2011, Vogel and the team reached the last sixteen of the Champions League by beating Manchester United 2-1 in the last game of the group stage . There it came to a reunion with his former employer FC Bayern Munich. The first leg in Basel was surprisingly won 1-0, but FC Basel had no chance in the second leg in Munich and lost a lot with 7-0.

On April 29, 2012, he won the Swiss championship title with FC Basel, the 15th in club history. On May 16, 2012, Basel also won the Swiss Cup final on penalties against league rivals FC Luzern and thus achieved the fifth double in the club's history.

The start of the 2012/2013 season was quite bumpy, the two qualifying games for the Champions League against CFR Cluj from Romania were lost and so the club only competed in the less noticed Europa League . Heiko Vogel was dismissed from FC Basel on October 15, 2012 and replaced by Murat Yakin . The team was only fourth in the league, eight points away from leaders Grasshopper Club Zurich , and differences with the club's management became known.

Return to FC Bayern Munich

On October 29, 2013 Vogel took over the A-Junior team of FC Bayern Munich as the successor to Marc Kienle , who moved to third division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden . With Bayern's A-Juniors, Vogel only achieved top midfield positions in both 2014 and 2015 in the South / Southwest relay , and they were also moderately successful in the UEFA Youth League and were eliminated in the preliminary round. For the 2015/16 season, Vogel succeeded Dutchman Erik ten Hag as head coach of the second team at FC Bayern Munich, which plays in the fourth-tier regional league Bayern . At the same time Vogel became the sporting director of the youth department, where he was mainly responsible for the U17, the U19 and the amateurs, as the second team is called colloquially and by the club. After the team had clearly missed the targeted promotion to the third division with a sixth place in the 2015/16 season and the promotion was already a long way off in the following season , Vogel joined the amateur team on March 20, 2017 back.

SK Sturm Graz

In January 2018, Vogel became coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club SK Sturm Graz , where he succeeded his compatriot Franco Foda , who was appointed team leader of the Austrian national soccer team . Franco Foda handed the team over to Vogel as top of the table or as winter king. Vogel received a contract with the Grazers that ran until June 2019. Vogel started with four league games without a win, the team lost the championship lead to Red Bull Salzburg and finished second behind Salzburg at the end of the season. In the cup final both teams faced each other and with a 1-0 victory Vogel won the title with Sturm Graz. The following season started rather moderately successful. The international competition was retired in August after defeats in the Champions League qualification against the Dutch runner-up Ajax Amsterdam and then in the Europa League qualification against the Cypriot cup winner AEK Larnaka . After SK Sturm was eighth in the league after 13 rounds, the club separated from Vogel on November 5, 2018.

KFC Uerdingen 05

On April 30, 2019 Vogel took over the third division team of KFC Uerdingen 05 from interim coach Frank Heinemann . The team was at this point 3 game days before the end of the season with 8 points ahead of a relegation place in the middle of the table. Vogel and the team took a point by the end of the season and finished the season in 11th place. Following the 9th matchday of the 2019/20 season , Vogel was dismissed in Krefeld after the team was on a relegation zone with nine points.

Borussia Monchengladbach

For the 2020/21 season , Vogel took over the U23 from Borussia Mönchengladbach as head coach and thus succeeded Arie van Lent .
