Erik ten Hag (born February 2, 1970 in Haaksbergen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch soccer player and current coach . He has been the head coach of the Dutch first division club Ajax Amsterdam since December 2017 .
Career
Starts as a player and assistant coach
As a player he was active for FC Twente , De Graafschap , RKC Waalwijk and FC Utrecht . In six years he made over 160 league games for Twente. He began his coaching career in Enschede in 2006 as an assistant coach . From 2009 to 2012 he worked as an assistant coach for PSV Eindhoven . His contract was dissolved together with that of trainer Fred Rutten on March 12, 2012. In the 2012/13 season he was the coach of the Go Ahead Eagles , with whom he was promoted to the Eredivisie .
First positions as head coach
For the 2013/14 season he took over the second team of FC Bayern Munich . In his first season, his team became champions of the Bayern Regionalliga soccer league , but lost in the promotion relegation against Fortuna Köln with a goal in stoppage time and narrowly missed promotion to the third division.
On July 1, 2015 Ten Hag was appointed head coach at the Eredivisie club FC Utrecht , for which he was active as a player in the 1995/96 season in the top Dutch division. In personal union he became the sports director of the club.
Highlights at Ajax Amsterdam
On December 28, 2017 Ten Hag became a coach at Ajax Amsterdam. He won the cup and championship double with Ajax in the 2018/19 season . In the Champions League , Ajax defeated Juventus Turin and defending champions Real Madrid in the knockout phase and were eliminated in the semifinals against Tottenham Hotspur . Following the season, he extended his contract term until June 2022.
