Fredericus Jacobus Rutten (born December 5, 1962 in Wijchen ) is a former Dutch football player and current football coach .

Player career

Rutten began his career at Alverna Wijchen. In 1978 he moved to FC Twente Enschede . On April 13, 1980, he played his first game in the honor division against Vitesse Arnhem . On November 16, 1988 Rutten completed his only game for the Dutch national soccer team . He was substituted on for the match between Italy and the Netherlands. In 1992 he had to end his career because of a hip injury.

Since Rutten was known for his safe and serene style of play, he was nicknamed "The Door Lock of Enschede" in the Netherlands.

Coaching career

From 1993 Rutten worked as an assistant trainer for Twente Enschede. From November 1995 to January 1996 he headed the team's training as an interim trainer. After the engagement of Hans Meyer as the new coach, he became assistant coach again. After Meyer moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in September 1999 , Rutten became the new head coach. In the 2000/01 season he won the KNVB Cup with Twente Enschede . In the summer of 2001 Rutten left Twente Enschede after 23 years and became youth coordinator at PSV Eindhoven .

After Guus Hiddink replaced Eric Gerets as coach at PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2002 , Rutten became assistant coach of the first team.

In 2003, 2004 and 2006 Rutten became Dutch champions with PSV Eindhoven and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2005 . After four years as an assistant coach at PSV Eindhoven, Rutten moved back to Twente Enschede in 2006, where he became coach and technical director. There he won the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Twente Enschede in 2006 and took part in the UEFA Cup . In the 2007/08 season Twente Enschede finished fourth in the table. After defeating NAC Breda and Ajax Amsterdam in the play-offs , Twente Enschede qualified for the qualifying round for the Champions League. Fred Rutten was then voted Dutch Coach of the Year .

On July 1, 2008, he took over the coaching position at FC Schalke 04 . He signed a two-year contract there. On March 26, 2009, Rutten was given leave of absence from Schalke 04 with immediate effect.

Just three weeks later, the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven announced that Rutten would take over the coaching post on July 1, 2009. He was released from Eindhoven on March 12, 2012.

On July 1, 2012, the Dutch first division club Vitesse Arnheim announced the engagement of Rutten as head coach. With Vitesse Arnheim he reached fourth place in the table in the 2012/13 season and thus qualified for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League . On May 18, 2013 Rutten announced that he would not renew his contract, which was running out at the end of the season.

For the 2014/15 season he succeeded Ronald Koeman at Feyenoord Rotterdam , but decided to leave the club after only one year.

In the summer of 2016 he signed a one-year contract as a trainer with Al Shabab in Dubai. After a series of eight games of victory, he was sacked on January 21, 2017.

After a year without a job, he became a coach at the Israeli club Maccabi Haifa on January 24, 2018 . On November 1, 2018, he resigned from this post after the technical director Mo Allach also resigned there.

On January 6, 2019 he was signed by RSC Anderlecht . After three games without a win in the championship play-offs and another game that was abandoned due to fan riots, RSC Anderlecht were at 5th place in the table, which did not entitle them to participate in the European Cup. The association then ended its cooperation with Rutten on April 16, 2019 by mutual agreement.
