Ronald Koeman (born March 21, 1963 in Zaandam , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch soccer player and current coach . He has been the head coach of FC Barcelona since August 19, 2020 .

Career as a player

In the club

Ronald Koeman (1983)

Together with his older brother Erwin , Ronald played in the youth department of Helpman Groningen . Three years later he moved to GRC Groningen . His breakthrough came in 1979 when he came to local rivals FC Groningen . Here the midfielder quickly drew attention to himself, not least because of his goal hazard and the dreaded free kicks.

Johan Cruyff , who brought the talent to the top club Ajax Amsterdam in 1983 and coached him from 1985 onwards, played an important role in Koeman's development . Cruyff retrained the midfielder to become a Libero . From then on, the strong duel Koeman mostly played in front of the defense, intercepted the opposing attacks and initiated the counterattack with a straightforward game. In 1985 he won the Dutch championship with Ajax and the cup the following year.

In 1986 Koeman moved to PSV Eindhoven , with whom he became champions in 1987. In the years that followed, PSV was the strongest team in Dutch club football and won the double twice . Koeman proved to be not only the support of the defense, but also a dangerous goal player: he scored a total of 107 goals in 281 appearances in the Eredivisie until 1989 , many of them by his hard-kicked free kicks. The greatest success in his time in Eindhoven was winning the European Cup in 1988 . The team knocked out title favorites Real Madrid and defeated Benfica Lisbon on penalties in the final . Koeman himself was voted Footballer of the Year in the Netherlands in 1987 and 1988 and was considered one of the best players in the libero position worldwide.

In 1989 he left the Netherlands and moved to FC Barcelona for a transfer fee of six million dollars , where he again played under coach Johan Cruyff. The team around the top players Andoni Zubizarreta , Julio Salinas , Albert Ferrer and Hristo Stoitchkov and Koeman was the dominant team in Spain in the early 1990s. She won the championship four times (1990-94) and the Spanish Cup once (1990). In the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup the subject Catalans 1991 Manchester United despite a goal by Koeman with 1: 2. The following year Barça won the European Cup for the first time in the club's history. Koeman scored the decisive goal for the 1-0 win over Sampdoria Genoa at London's Wembley Stadium with a free kick in extra time.

In 1995 he returned to the Netherlands and now moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam . Koeman had played for all three top clubs in the honor division. A move to Werder Bremen was also under discussion for a short time , but the Dutch coach Aad de Mos spoke out against a commitment. Koeman also refused the move because he feared hostility from spectators in the Bundesliga : after the semi-final victory over Germany at the European Championship in 1988 Koeman provoked the audience (see below). In 1997 he ended his active career and began a career as an assistant coach.

With 193 first division goals, he is the most successful goalscorer among defensive players.

In the national team

Koeman (m.) With Ruud Gullit (l.) And Frank Rijkaard (r.) At Elftal (1986)

In 1983 he made his debut in the national team with his brother Erwin. After the Dutch had not been able to qualify for a major tournament for eight years, they won their first major title at the 1988 European Championship . Both Koemans were part of the team that had a number of exceptional players with Marco van Basten , Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard . The European champions were also considered the favorites at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, but the team failed in the round of 16 against Germany, four years later at the 1994 World Cup against Brazil in the quarter-finals. After this disappointment, he ended his career in the Elftal after 78 international matches (14 goals) .

Koeman also became known through a tangible scandal. In 1988, after winning the European Championship semi-final against Germany (2: 1) in Hamburg, he swapped jerseys with Olaf Thon and demonstratively wiped his buttocks with it. He caused a riot among the audience. However, Koeman later showed remorse.

Career as a coach

He has been a trainer since 2000. With Ajax Amsterdam he won several national titles and caused a sensation in the Champions League . Koeman later coached Benfica Lisbon, with whom he failed in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2006 at his former club FC Barcelona. From October 2007 to April 2008 he worked for Valencia CF.

Ronald Koeman was the new coach of AZ Alkmaar for the 2009/10 season and replaced the previous coach Louis van Gaal , who moved to Bayern . On December 6, 2009 Koeman was dismissed as coach of AZ Alkmaar after his club's seventh loss of the season.

In July 2011, he resumed coaching at his former club Feyenoord as the successor to Mario Been . This made Koeman the first footballer to work both as a player and as a coach in all of the big three of Dutch football - Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord.

In June 2014 Koeman was introduced as the successor to Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton FC . In his first season with the Saints , he reached a respectable seventh place in the table. In the following year he even managed to qualify directly for the Europa League by taking sixth place in the table .

In June 2016, his move to league rivals Everton FC was announced. Koeman signed a contract with the Toffees until 2019. On October 23, 2017, Everton FC announced the separation from Ronald Koeman.

On February 6, 2018, the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) introduced Koeman as the new bond coach for the Dutch national team . In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he reached the finals with the team in Group 1 of League A ahead of France and Germany , but lost the final 1-0 to Portugal . In the European Championship qualification , the Elftal under Koeman made it into the finals behind Germany and ahead of Northern Ireland , Belarus and Estonia , which had to be postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

In August 2020 Koeman resigned his post as Bondscoach on and took over the season 2020/21 the FC Barcelona to succeed Quique Setién that after the runner and a 2: 8 defeat against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the final tournament of the Champions League dismissed had been.
