Sergi Roberto Carnicer (born February 7, 1992 in Reus , Tarragona province ) is a Spanish football player . The midfielder plays for FC Barcelona .

Due to his versatile use in the offensive and his technique, speed and game intelligence, he is already seen as a possible successor to Luis Enrique in the Barça environment .

Career

Roberto played for Gimnàstic de Tarragona and for his home club FC Reus until 2006 . He entered the FC Barcelona youth academy at the age of 14 . In the B-youth he was the top scorer of his team in the 2008/09 season and was promoted to the A-youth in the following season, but was also regularly used in the reserve team of FC Barcelona . The then 17-year-old played 22 games for Barcelona B this season and was promoted to the Segunda División at the end of the season . Roberto won with all four youth teams in which he was used, the respective Spanish junior championship.

On November 10, 2010 Sergi Roberto made his debut for the A-team of Barcelona in the cup match against AD Ceuta . On April 27, 2011, he made his first appearance in the Champions League against Real Madrid , when he was substituted on in the 2-0 win of Barcelona shortly before the end. Almost four weeks later, he played his first league game for the A-team of FC Barcelona . In the last league game of the 2010/11 season, he played for a full 90 minutes in a 3-1 away win against FC Málaga . For the 2013/14 season Roberto finally moved up into the first team's squad.

For the 2018/19 season Roberto was appointed fourth team captain by coach Ernesto Valverde behind Lionel Messi , Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué .

Sergi Roberto plays regularly for Spain's junior national teams. With the Spanish U-17 selection , he took part in the 2009 World Cup in Nigeria . With the exception of the first group game, he was on the starting line-up in all six games in Spain. He decided the quarter-finals against Burkina Faso almost single-handedly with his three goals. Spain only lost to Nigeria in the semi-finals, but won the subsequent game for third place against Colombia. On March 27, 2016, he played his first international match in a 0-0 draw against Romania .
