Martin Braithwaite (born June 5, 1991 in Esbjerg ) is a Danish football player . He is under contract with FC Barcelona and is a Danish international .

Beginnings in Denmark

The son of a Guyanese father joined the Esbjerg Sædding-Guldager Idrætsforening (SGI) as a child and moved to the youth department of Esbjerg fB before joining the youth team at FC Midtjylland in 2007. A short time later he returned to Esbjerg fB and made his debut in the men's division on October 4, 2009 in the 1: 2 defeat in the away game on matchday 10 against FC Copenhagen . After the end of the 2010/11 season , he rose with the team as bottom of the table in the 1st division and in the 2011/12 season again directly. As the table sixth of the 2012/13 season, Esbjerg fB qualified for the play-offs for the 2013/14 Europa League . In the 2013-14 season , Braithwaite played four more times and then left the club.

Toulouse FC

In August 2013 he moved to France for Toulouse FC . By mid-February 2020, he had scored 6 goals in 24 league games (21 times from the start).

Change to FC Barcelona

After two offensive players at FC Barcelona , Luis Suárez and Ousmane Dembélé, suffered long-term injuries after the transfer window had closed on January 31, 2020, the Spanish association granted the club the exemption to sign a player from Spain outside the transfer window. On February 20, FC Barcelona pulled Braithwaites' € 18m release clause . He signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2024, which includes an exit clause of 300 million euros. For the knockout phase of the Champions League 2019/20 Braithwaite is not eligible to play since the late notification period had expired on 3 February.

National team

Martin Braithwaite played three times for the Danish U17 national team , four times for the U18 , eleven times for the U19 national team and once for the U20 national team . With the U21 national team , after two defeats against Spain in the play-offs (0: 5 and 1: 3) in October 2012 , he missed qualifying for the 2013 U21 European Championship in Israel .

Braithwaite would also have been eligible to play for the Guyanese senior team. However, he declined a corresponding offer in July 2012. On June 5, 2013, he made his debut in the Danish senior team in a 2-1 win in a test match in Aalborg against Georgia ; he was substituted for Nicklas Pedersen after 61 minutes . He was used in six qualifying games for the European Championship 2016 , the Danish team missed the qualification.
