The Ligue 1 2016/17 was the 79th season in the highest French football league of men.

Paris Saint-Germain started the season as the defending champion . The AS Nancy , Dijon FCO and the FC Metz secured promotion to the top flight and replaced the three relegated Stade Reims , GFC Ajaccio and ES Troyes AC .

A total of 20 teams took part in the championship. At the end of this season, for the first time since 1997, only two participants were relegated directly and were replaced by two second division clubs, during table 18. played in two barrages against the third-placed L2 for the league's whereabouts.
