The twelve teams played against each other three times in a preliminary round, so that each club played 21 games. Then the league was divided into two groups of four: the best four teams played in the championship round for the title and international starting places, the four worst teams against relegation to the Segona Divisió . The points from the preliminary round were taken, so it could happen that the first of the relegation round at the end of the season had more points than the last of the championship round. However, this did not affect the end result.

Championship round
The four best-placed teams in the preliminary round played against each other for the championship in a double round, with all results from the preliminary round being transferred.
The four teams in places 5 to 8 of the preliminary round played against relegation in the second half of the season. The last placed team was relegated directly, while the penultimate relegation games against the second from the Segona Divisió had to deny.
The runner-up of the Segona Divisió played relegation games against the seventh of the Primera Divisió after the regular season. The games took place on May 28 and 31, 2017.
