The 2016/17 Bundesliga was the 54th season of the top German division in men's football . It began on August 26, 2016 with a home game of the defending champions FC Bayern Munich against Werder Bremen (6: 0) and ended on May 20, 2017. From December 22, 2016 to January 19, 2017, it was, exceptionally, already after the 16 Matchday, interrupted by the winter break. On the 31st match day, FC Bayern Munich became German football champions with a 6-0 away win at VfL Wolfsburg .
Season course
Championship fight
For the fifth time in a row, FC Bayern Munich secured the championship trophy, although the Munich team was only able to dominate the competition at will in the second half of the season. Carlo Ancelotti's team struggled most of the first half of the season to shape games according to their ideas. The 6-0 opening win against Werder Bremen was followed by a late 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04, in which the Munich team only scored their goals in the final phase between the 80th and 90th minute. In the away win in Hamburg, it took until the 88th minute before Kimmich scored the goal of the day. After the 0: 1 at Borussia Dortmund on the 11th matchday, Bayern had to hand over the top of the table to new league player RB Leipzig for the first time after 39 season-spanning match days. With a 5-0 home win against VfL Wolfsburg and a simultaneous defeat for the Saxons at FC Ingolstadt, the team regained the top of the table on matchday 14 and held it until the end of the season.
Before the start of the season, RB Leipzig was seen as a newcomer rather than a candidate for midfield. Ralf Rangnick gave up his coaching post before the season in favor of Ralph Hasenhüttl , who had moved from FC Ingolstadt to Cottaweg, and concentrated again on his duties as sports director. The promotion team was u. a. reinforced with Naby Keïta , Timo Werner and Oliver Burke , whereby the former were able to prevail in the team immediately. After the cup failure at Dynamo Dresden, the Saxons started the new season extremely well. A 2: 2 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was followed by victories against the then reigning runner-up Borussia Dortmund and Hamburger SV . From the sixth matchday onwards, RB won 8 games in a row and took over the top of the table with a 3-2 away win in Leverkusen on matchday 11. It was also the first league lead by a team from the new federal states since Hansa Rostock in August 1991. Against Bayern they had to admit defeat 3-0. What followed was a bumpy second half, in which the Saxons celebrated eight wins, but also suffered five defeats and four draws. However, after SC Freiburg was defeated 4-0 on the 29th matchday, it was clear that they would take part in a European competition for the first time, which also meant the return of the city of Leipzig to international football after 29 years of abstinence. On matchday 32, the Saxons qualified for the UEFA Champions League with a 4-1 win at Hertha BSC and were runner-up on the following match day despite another defeat against Bayern.
Borussia Dortmund fell short of expectations. After the eighth matchday, Borussia were already six points behind Bayern, and the season was generally characterized by problems that emerged between head coach Thomas Tuchel and the team. The gap narrowed again in the middle of the first half of the season, but Borussia Dortmund never got beyond third place and in the meantime even seemed to be in danger of not being able to qualify directly for the Champions League. The mixed sporting development culminated in the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel after winning the DFB Cup.
International places
TSG 1899 Hoffenheim had a successful season for the first time in years and were the only team to remain unbeaten against Munich. A 1: 1 in Munich was a 1: 0 home win against the old and new champions. Under Julian Nagelsmann, the Kraichgauer only lost their first game on matchday 19 and fought a close battle for the Champions League places with Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha BSC from the middle of the first half of the season. From the start of the second half, however, only Borussia Dortmund remained as a direct competitor. Between the 26th and 29th matchday the Hoffenheim team were in third place and also returned there again on the 31st matchday, but in the end had to admit defeat in a direct duel on the 32nd matchday 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund, which the Participation in the CL qualification was certain.
1. FC Köln developed into one of the surprise teams in the battle for Europe. In the course of the first half of the season, the Domstadt team achieved notable successes thanks to their sovereignty and a well-rehearsed team, such as a 1-1 draw against Bayern on the sixth match day. Over the course of the season, the "Effzeh" always stayed within reach of the international places and finally managed to qualify for the first European Cup in 25 years with a 2-0 win against Mainz 05 on the last match day. Hertha BSC was never seriously pushed out of the international positions during the season. The last miserable away record (after the 15th matchday only one away win) could not change that. Coach Pal Dardai's team showed little constant performance, especially in the last third of the season, but still kept their distance to the competition and reached direct qualification for the Europa League at the end of the season.
Surprisingly, by winning the Dortmund Cup, SC Freiburg qualified as a promoted team for the third round of the Europa League qualification. After the direct resurgence, the team played a strong season and was within reach of the international places the entire time. After a temporary fall to 11th place, Christian Streich's team stabilized and at the end of the season were among the top eight teams in the table for over six weeks.
Midfield: Werder soaring, disillusionment at Schalke
Werder Bremen was one of the relegation candidates in the league for a long time. After a series of three defeats at the beginning of the season, the Skripnik / Frings coaching team had to vacate their post. Alexander Nouri, who was declared head coach on October 1, initially acted as interim coach. The downward trend in Bremen was initially stopped, but the team remained in danger of relegation and was in 15th place at the end of the first half of the season. The second half of the season was the turning point for the team from Osterdeich. After Werder could not free themselves from the relegation zone by the 25th matchday, a strong final spurt followed with victories against RB Leipzig, Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC, which catapulted Bremen into 8th place in the final table.
Borussia Mönchengladbach was traded as a candidate for the international places before the season, but was never really convincing and had to struggle with injuries to its top performers. After a sporty downturn that brought the club from fifth place to close to the relegation site, André Schubert was dismissed and replaced by Dieter Hecking. This was able to lead the team to the second round of the Europa League and the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, but even under him the foals did not find a connection to the upper ranks. In the end, there was ninth place.
Schalke's international dreams burst at the latest with the end of the Europa League quarter-finals against Ajax Amsterdam . A series of five opening defeats was followed by a season that took place completely in the no man's land of the table. Schalke did not find their usual game, and in addition there were repeated defeats against competitors for the European places. After a disappointing 10th place at the end of the season, coach Markus Weinzierl was dismissed.
Eintracht Frankfurt had nothing to do with the relegation battle for the entire season after relegation, but repeatedly struggled with a lack of consistency. After staying in third place for three game days in a row at the start of the second half of the season, defeats against RB Leipzig, Hertha BSC and FC Ingolstadt led to a fall into the middle of the table. In the end, the Adler landed in 11th place. They also reached the final of the DFB Cup.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen suffered a similar fate. After a mixed start to the season, the Werkself stayed close to the international positions for a long time, but only finished sixth on two match days in the first half of the season. While they performed well in the Champions League, they mostly stayed below the table in the Bundesliga of the European regions. After a 2: 6 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on the 23rd match day, Roger Schmidt was dismissed and replaced by Tayfun Korkut, who could not prevent the team from falling to 12th place at the end of the season.
Relegation battle: Shivering game for Hamburg and the bitter end for FC Ingolstadt
FC Augsburg held their ground for most of the season in the lower midfield and benefited from victories against direct competition from Bremen, Darmstadt and Ingolstadt in the first half of the season. Nevertheless, the first round balance with only 3 wins up to the 14th matchday was the end for Dirk Schuster, who was brought from Darmstadt. He was on leave on December 14th after the away game in Hamburg and replaced by Manuel Baum. This was able to stabilize the Fuggerstadters and keep them in the Bundesliga.
Hamburger SV started the new season extremely poorly. From the first five games, only one point was scored against FC Ingolstadt on the first day of the match. It then set a 1: 3 in Leverkusen, in which the lead was lost within a few minutes in the final phase. Against league newcomer RB Leipzig a desolate second half was the receipt - 0: 4 it was in the end. In the end, Bruno Labbadia, who had only been celebrated as a savior a year earlier, had to pack his bags after a 0-1 home defeat against Bayern - Markus Gisdol came for him. But even under him, the Hanseatic League did not get into calmer table regions, even if on matchday 28, the second-highest place of the season was achieved with 13th place. With a 2-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg, the relegation was averted on the last day of the match.
FSV Mainz 05 had one of the negative surprises of the season. A first half of the season, which was largely played out in the upper midfield, was followed by a continuous crash in the second half of the season, which culminated in the defeat in Freiburg on matchday 28. The season turned out to be a disappointment in both the Europa League and the Bundesliga. At the end of the season, the Rheinhessen finished 15th. Head coach Martin Schmidt was released after the season.
After a good start to the season, VfL Wolfsburg fell into the lower midfield of the table on matchday 6 and was constantly in danger of relegation. Dieter Hecking was fired after the defeat against RB Leipzig on matchday 8 and replaced by Valérien Ismaël, who previously coached the Wolfsburg U23. But even under him the problems of the Wolfsburg were not resolved, further inconstancy and passivity determined the Wolfsburg game. This was also fueled by internal squabbles among the team. In mid-December, Klaus Allofs was finally dismissed as Managing Director Sport and replaced by Olaf Rebbe. After there was no improvement at the beginning of the second half of the season, Andries Jonker was signed as the new head coach on February 26th. Under this one could make some games, including at RB Leipzig, successfully, but this did not save the club from relegation. With two victories against Eintracht Braunschweig one could finally still keep the class.
FC Ingolstadt was in a relegation battle for the entire season. This was to be expected as the team had the smallest budget in the league next to SV Darmstadt 98. Nevertheless, you could fight for many small successes, such as a 1-0 victory over the eventual runner-up RB Leipzig on matchday 14, so that 15th place slipped within reach until the end. But even the new head coach Maik Walpurgis, who was signed at the beginning of November, could not prevent relegation. After the 33rd matchday and a 1-1 draw in Freiburg, the Schanzer's relegation was sealed after only two seasons in the Bundesliga.
Darmstadt 98, like FC Ingolstadt, was in the fight to stay in the league from the start. At the end of the first half of the season, a 1-0 defeat in Freiburg resulted in the first fall to the bottom of the table. Coach Norbert Meier had already been sacked a week earlier after a 2-0 home defeat against HSV. Even interim coach Ramon Berndroth and his successor Torsten Frings could no longer prevent the descent of SV Darmstadt 98, which did not even leave last place in the entire second half of the season. After a defeat at Bayern Munich on matchday 32, relegation was certain.
