Tobias Welz (born July 11, 1977 ) is a German football referee .

Welz has been a referee for FC 1934 Bierstadt since the 2016/17 season. Before that, he whistled for SpVgg Nassau Wiesbaden until his home club was dissolved and has been DFB referee since 1999 . First he was used from 2004 in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the Bundesliga he started out as an assistant; since the 2010/11 season he has been a Bundesliga referee. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 28, 2010 when 1. FC Nürnberg played against SC Freiburg .

Welz was appointed FIFA referee alongside Christian Dingert from 2013 to 2019 . They replaced Knut Kircher and Michael Weiner , who had voluntarily left as FIFA referees. Welz has been part of the expanded European top referee team since 2015. On December 6, 2019, the DFB announced that Welz will volunteer his place as FIFA referee at the end of 2019. He was succeeded by Harm Osmers .

On July 4, 2020, Welz was entrusted by the DFB with the management of the 2020 DFB Cup final in Berlin between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich . Rafael Foltyn and Martin Thomsen were nominated as assistants, the fourth official was Patrick Ittrich . Felix Zwayer was used as the VAR .

Tobias Welz, who is a full-time officer in the Hessian police , lives in Wiesbaden . In his youth he played at SC Klarenthal 1968 and at FV Biebrich 02, among others . His father Klaus Welz was also used as a referee in the 2nd Bundesliga.
