Tobias Stieler (born July 2, 1981 in Obertshausen ) is a German football referee . His home club is the SG Rosenhöhe Offenbach in the Hessian Football Association . At the local referees association, he took his newcomer course in 1995.

He made his debut in the second division in the 2009/10 season with the game SC Paderborn 07 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . On February 17, 2012, he led his first Bundesliga match when TSG 1899 Hoffenheim played against 1. FSV Mainz 05 . Stieler directed the opening game of the 2017/18 season between FC Bayern Munich and Bayer 04 Leverkusen . It was the first game in Bundesliga history that was carried out using video evidence . Video assistant Jochen Drees supported Stieler in the 53rd minute when Charles Aránguiz from Leverkusen committed a foul on Robert Lewandowski in the penalty area . Stieler initially rated the scene as not worthy of a penalty, but after Drees intervened, he changed his decision and gave FC Bayern a penalty, which Lewandowski converted to 3-0.

Alongside Bastian Dankert, Stieler has been a referee on the FIFA list since 2014. They replace Florian Meyer and Thorsten Kinhöfer , who had to retire due to old age. He first appeared in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League on September 29, 2016 in the match between Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting Braga , and made his debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League on September 27, 2017 in Turin against Juventus Olympiacos Piraeus .

His first international tournament was the 2017 U-21 European Football Championship in Poland. There he led the matches between Sweden and England (first game of the tournament) and Portugal against Spain.

On May 14, 2019, Stieler was appointed by the DFB to lead the final of the DFB-Pokal 2018/19 on May 25, 2019 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium between RB Leipzig and FC Bayern Munich .
