Tschammer Cup 1937

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The third competition for the Tschammer Cup took place in 1937 .

4500 teams took part in the 1937 competition, mostly for cost reasons, about 1000 fewer regional league clubs than in the previous year. There were some organizational mishaps, contrary to the cup statute, several Gauligame champions had to compete at the regional level. One of the consequences of this was that the Pomeranian champion Viktoria Stolp was no longer represented in the first final round. Due to a calculation error , the field of the first final round consisted of only 61 teams instead of 64, so that three teams received a bye. Nothing has changed in the previous mode of group games - final rounds - quarter- to semi-finals and final.

FC Schalke 04 won the final on January 9, 1938 with a 2-1 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf .

Match report
In the first western derby in the young cup history, FC Schalke 04 were the clear favorites, after the superior championship in 1937 the Knappen wanted to perfect the double by winning the cup. In rainy weather, both teams first felt each other. Surprisingly, Düsseldorf had the first scoring chance of the game after just five minutes, but right winger Albrecht failed at Schalke's goalkeeper Klodt. Then Fritz Szepan's hour struck. Although the action of the Schalke director, who had previously been injured for a long time, was questionable until shortly before the start of the game, he swung himself into a playful masterpiece with which he put his team on the road to success. After it was still 0-0 at the break, Schalke took a double strike immediately after the restart. In the 46th and 47th minutes Kalwitzki and Szepan brought their team 2-0 in front. Fortunas couldn't cope with this shock and remained powerless for a long time against the Schalke game vortex. Although they were able to draw hope again in the 84th minute when Janes was able to convert a hand penalty, Schalke 04 held onto their lead until the final whistle.
