↓ District Leagues

The Gauliga Bayern (officially the Bavarian sports division from 1939 ) was one of 16 football Gauligs that were introduced as the top divisions in Germany after the Nazi takeover in 1933 instead of the district leagues. In it, the Bavarian participant for the final round of the German championship was determined.

history

The Gau classification 1933,
No. 16 = Bavaria

Sportgau Bayern, founded in 1933, was numerically the largest in Germany with around 950 football clubs, together with Gau Mitte. Twelve teams that had previously played in the two seasons of the Bavarian regional league in the 1932/33 season entered the new top division for the 1933/34 opening season . In the first two seasons, the number of participants was reduced by one team each until the “target strength” of ten teams that is usual for Gauligen was reached. A total of 28 teams managed to qualify for the Gauliga. On October 1, 1941, the Bavarian sports area was divided into five districts, but unlike the vast majority of the Gauligen, the Gauliga Bayern was held on a single track in the third year of the war. It was not until 1942 that the Gauliga Bayern split into the Gauliga Nordbayern and the Gauliga Südbayern , each of which selected an independent Gaumeister who competed in the German soccer championship. The 1944/45 season was to be held again as a uniform Gauliga Bayern and was started in five seasons, but the game had to be stopped in many places due to the war. Only in the Munich / Upper Bavaria relay , in which FC Bayern was unbeatable in first place at the time of the cancellation, was a champion crowned.

The Gaumeister qualified for the final round of the German championship , so in 1943 and 1944 there were two Bavarian representatives in the German final round. By far the most successful team of the Gauliga time in Bavaria was 1. FC Nürnberg , which not only secured five Gaumeist titles by 1942, but also became German champions once ( 1936 ) and twice runners-up ( 1934 and 1937 ). After the division of the Sportgau Bavaria in 1942, champions were determined separately in the north and south, and they both then competed in the German finals.
