The Gauliga Westfalen was one of 16 Gauligen , the top soccer leagues in Germany after the National Socialist seizure of power . The area of the Gauliga included the Prussian province of Westphalia and the state of Lippe .

history

The Gau classification 1933,
No. 9 = Westphalia

From 1933 ten teams from Westphalia and Lippe competed to take part in the German championship, in which the Gauliga champion was allowed to take part. When selecting the ten participants for the first 1933/34 season, not only sporting aspects played a role. The forced merger Sportfreunde 95 Dortmund was taken up on the grounds that the city of Dortmund needed a Gauligist. Neither of the two main clubs had been top notch in the preseason.

The FC Schalke 04 dominated the Gauliga and all the championships was able to secure. The team remained unbeaten six times during a season. Between the 1935/36 and 1938/39 seasons, the “Royal Blues” remained undefeated for over four years. Schalke became German champions in 1934, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1940 and 1942 . In the years 1933, 1938 and 1941, Schalke was still runner-up.

After the outbreak of the Second World War , the Gauliga was increased to twelve clubs for the 1940/41 season. After only one year, the league returned to the old squadron strength. After the 1943/44 season, the Gauliga was dissolved and replaced by three "war Gauklassen". In September 1944 the game had to be stopped due to the war. The 18 clubs that played in the Gauliga Westfalen between 1933 and 1944 formed the two-pronged Landesliga Westfalen after the war .
