Handball Gauliga Westphalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Handball-Gauliga Westfalen was one of the Gauligen , the top field handball leagues in Germany after the National Socialist seizure of power . The area of the Gauliga included the Prussian province of Westphalia and the state of Lippe . The season winners were symbolically honored with the blue ribbon of a Gaumeister and qualified for the final round of the German championship. The sixteen Gauligen were set up in the same way as football. From the 1933/34 season onwards, the two largest ball sports in Germany had an identical structure.

1939/40

Due to the war, the Gauliga was again divided into two squadrons for traffic reasons. Due to the outbreak of war, the military SV Hamm could not take its place in the Gauliga, as all players were in the war. The TV Weidenau waived the promotion, so the PSV Recklinghausen moved up. In order to be able to set up a playable North relay, the Gauvorstand "ordered" the teams from Altenhagen, Künsebeck and VfB Bielefeld into the first division.

In the 1939/40 season, the defending champion military SV Hindenburg Minden could not take part in the game because all the players were soldiers in the war. After enough players were available again in October 1940, the club subsequently registered its team for the 1940/41 season.
