The footballers of SC 08 reached the top division for the first time in 1920 when they were promoted to the Westphalia-West district league, but had to relegate after a year after a league reform. The second ascent in 1923 was followed by relegation. Only with the third promotion in 1926 the team was able to establish itself in the top division. According to tradition, the future national player Ernst Kuzorra had already signed a preliminary contract with SC, which was torn up by his Schalke teammate Valentin Przybylski so that Kuzorra could continue to play for Schalke. In 1928 the SC was runner-up in the 1st district class Westphalia-West behind Borussia Rheine and was briefly the sporting number one in the city due to the descent of local rivals Prussia . Five years later, the 08 missed the newly created Gauliga Westfalen . Twice the team reached the promotion round to the Gauliga, but failed in 1939 at VfB 03 Bielefeld and a year later at Union Gelsenkirchen .

After the end of the war, in 1947 they were promoted to the Landesliga Westfalen , which was then the highest amateur league in Westphalia. Relegation followed three years later, before resumption in 1952. This time the 08ers stayed in the national league for only two years. In the following decades, the club slipped down to the district league B. After two ascents in a row, the SC 08 returned to the national league in 1994 and was runner-up there two years later behind Sportfreunde Lotte . Two relegations in a row brought the club back in 2001 in the district league A. The background to the decline were financial and tax irregularities with a main sponsor. After promotions in 2003 and 2009, the club played again in the national league. In 2012 it went back down to the district league. In 2015, the Münster runner-up behind Prussia Lengerich and defeated SpVg Hagen and then SpVg Brakel in the following relegation , thus returning to the seventh-class state league.

In 2017 the SC 08 was runner-up there behind SpVg Beckum . For the 2019/20 season, the club withdrew its team from the national league. The reason was financial problems, disputes with the entire club and the departure of numerous players and officials. From the 2020/21 season, the club wants to continue in the district league.

The D-youth of SC Münster 08 became Westphalia champion in 2012. In 1967 the club's A-youth won the Westphalia Cup together with STV Horst-Emscher . Since 2011 there has been a partnership between the youth football department and Borussia Dortmund . In return for trainer training and internships at BVB, talented young players from Münster 08 have a better chance of being tracked by BVB scouts.

Handball

In 1939, the women's team of SC Münster 08 qualified as Westphalian champions in field handball for the final round of the German championship. There, in the round of 16, the Münster women met the later finalists Eimsbütteler TV and were clearly defeated with 0:10. Today the women's team plays in the district league.

The men of SC 08 played in the then second-rate Regionalliga West from 1970 and secured the West German championship a year later by winning the final over TV Schalksmühle . In the promotion games to the Bundesliga , the team met the Flensburger TB , the forerunner of today's SG Flensburg-Handewitt . After both teams had won their respective home game, there was a play-off that Flensburg won 14:13. Until 1977, the SC handball players were still in the regional league before they disappeared into the lower divisions. Today the team competes in the national league.
