Munster-Herz-Jesu-Viertel
The Herz-Jesu-Viertel , also known as Klein-Muffi because of the history of its origins , is an inner-city district of the Westphalian city of Münster and belongs to the Mitte district . Roughly speaking, it extends from Manfred-von-Richthofen-Strasse in the north to Schillerstrasse in the south, which separates it from the Münster harbor . The demarcation in the west is mainly through the Hohenzollernring , while in the east the Dortmund-Ems Canal forms a very clear border. The name of the district is derived from the Herz-Jesu-Kirche on Wolbecker Straße , the central traffic axis .
history
The quarter emerged at the end of the 19th century when mainly Dutch canal workers settled there, who were involved in the construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Münster harbor. In the population of Münster, the city quarter was given the name “little muffie”, derived from “muffen” from the secret and special language Masematte , which means “stink” or “smell bad”. The quarter was a stronghold of the Masematte because smugglers and criminals took up their quarters there.
Cityscape
The district can be divided into two parts: The northern part is largely shaped by authorities and other service companies. In particular, the air force barracks with the air transport command dominate here . The southern part, especially south of Wolbecker Straße , is mainly used for living. Due to its location on the canal and the “Kreativkai” at the harbor, as well as its proximity to the city center, the district is a popular residential area. The high bunker on Ottostraße was in this residential area .
