Handorf in Munster

Handorf is a district of Münster in Westphalia in the eastern district . He has a long history, such as B. shows the medieval castle complex Haskenau at the confluence of the Werse into the Ems . Due to its location on the Werse, Handorf was in 19./20. It was a popular excursion destination in the 19th century and was previously known as the village of large coffee pots . In the meantime, Handorf has transformed into a dormitory town in Münster, which with its numerous single-family houses in the countryside is particularly popular with families with children. Many traditional coffee shops in Handorf have closed in recent years (Hugerlandshof, Hubertushof-Kavermann, Wildlife Park Haus Pröbsting, Haus Vennemann, Bitter / Handorfer Hof, Eynck / Deutscher Vater and Wersehof) without replacing them.

The village patroness of Handorf is St. Petronilla , after whom the Catholic village church is named. Since 2008 a crib path has started at the church , which leads to the Church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt, also called Dyckburg Church . In 2017, 72 cribs were installed in Handorf near the parish church 118, along the way to Dyckburg.

In Handorf there is also a Protestant church ("Zionskirche"). The Heriburg secondary school in Handorf has since been closed due to a lack of students; But there are still two municipal primary schools: a Catholic (Cardinal von Galen School) and an interdenominational (Matthias Claudius School).

There is also a sports center in Handorf, consisting of an indoor swimming pool run as a public swimming pool - the open-air wave pool was closed and demolished by the city of Münster at the end of the 2006 season -, a gym and several soccer fields, the construction of which the municipality of Handorf, which was independent until 1974, was to be built shortly before Incorporation to Münster, which came into force on January 1, 1975, was commissioned.

The Dorbaum district, which belongs to Handorf, is characterized by single-family housing estates and a barracks including a training area. This is popular as a local recreation area. The training area in the north of Dorbaum, which was handed over by the British to the Bundeswehr in 2013, has been closed to the public since 2003 because of the danger of duds and ammunition. Both military training areas are valuable nature reserves and accommodate u. a. one of the largest tree frog occurrences in the Münsterland and rare animal species such as the honey buzzard and the common toad. The northern TrÜbPl borders on the nature conservation pasture landscape Emsaue Vadrup of the NABU nature conservation station Münsterland , which is developing into a supraregional tourist destination with wild Konik horses and Heck cattle .

In May 2013, the Ministry of Justice announced that the new Münster correctional facility was to be built on the site . Against this, especially against the associated destruction of the natural landscape, numerous local groups, the local hunters, a citizens' initiative and the NABU local association are directed . On September 12, 2014, Justice Minister Thomas Kutschaty informed the state parliament in Düsseldorf and, finally, Lord Mayor Markus Lewe that Handorf was finally declining as a location for a new prison building in Münster.

In the Lützow barracks on the site of the former Münster-Handorf airfield, teaching group B of the army non-commissioned officers' school is housed. There used to be a few thousand soldiers stationed there, now only a few hundred course participants live there. Part of the 1st German-Dutch Corps is also stationed here. Adjacent to the military area is the outdoor exercise area of the North Rhine-Westphalia Fire Brigade Institute (IdF). The IdF is the largest fire brigade training facility in Germany.

The Hornheide Specialist Clinic is located in Dorbaum, an interdisciplinary and supra-regional center for the treatment of tumors of the skin, the head and neck area and surgical reconstruction.
