history

The name ( Gievenbach = Low German "Güörtpott" or "Goltepelsbach") probably goes back to Germanic origins. The district is mentioned for the first time in 889 as "Villa Gibonbeki". Originally Gievenbeck was just a small farming community along the Gievenbach. Space was created by clearing the forest , so today's street with the name Gievenbecker Reihe was created, which was the nucleus of the district. The Appelbreistiege, which is now only used as a cycle path , was originally the most important trade route from Münster to the west.

In 1903 the Gievenbecker row was incorporated into the urban area of Münster as part of the Überwasser office . It was still a small peasantry. In 1920 there were only 521 inhabitants. Electricity did not exist until 1921.

After the Second World War , when the university hospital was expanded in the immediate vicinity of Gievenbeck , the district also developed rapidly. A settlement was created around the Michael Church. In the 1970s, the district was expanded, especially with new living space for students. The first student residences were built on Gescher- and Rüschhausweg. The district grew towards the northwest. In the 1980s, the district continued to grow, especially in the north on Horstmarer Landweg and Schöppingenweg / Gescherweg. The Toppheide residential area was built in the early 1990s.

The district has been expanding to the south-west since 2000 and has now exceeded the limit of 20,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest district in Münster after Hiltrup . In just 50 years, an agricultural landscape has turned into a large residential district.
