Old observatory in Münster (2011)

The old observatory of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in the Gievenbeck district existed from 1968 to the 1980s. Today it is used as an international guest house.

history

The observatory was built in 1968 outside the city center on Horstmarer Landweg 248; around this time, too, the natural science institutes of the university were built at the Coesfelder Kreuz . It should serve for training in astronomy . 1972-1974 a student dormitory was completed in the immediate vicinity by the Münster Student Union, which made work in the observatory difficult due to the resulting shading and the incidence of light at night. At the beginning of the 1980s, the work was finally stopped. Since then, the university's astronomers have been working at the Hoher List observatory in the Eifel . In the early 1990s, the observatory was converted into a dormitory for visiting researchers at the university. In 2011 the old student dormitory was torn down and replaced by a new one.
