The Julius Kühn Institute - Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants ( JKI ), officially spelled as the Julius Kühn Institute , is a research institution created in the division of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) on the basis of the law on the reorganization of departmental research of October 24, 2007 and is part of it independent higher federal authority . Its tasks are determined in particular by the Plant Protection Act , the purposes of which also form the framework of its research assignment .

In the institute, which bears the name of the agricultural scientist Julius Kühn , the Federal Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry and the Federal Institute for Breeding Research on Cultivated Plants are combined with the involvement of two institutes of the Federal Research Institute for Agriculture (Institute for Plant Nutrition and Soil Science and Institute for Plant Cultivation and Grassland Management) . It is based in Quedlinburg and has several branches in Berlin , Braunschweig , Darmstadt , Dossenheim , Dresden , Elsdorf , Sanitz , Kleinmachnow , Münster and Siebeldingen .
