For many years he was the head of the Institute for Plant Protection in the Forest of the Biological Federal Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Braunschweig . He has mainly dealt with the diseases of woody plants and is known not least for his widespread standard work Diseases of Forest and Park Trees (1983).

Life

Heinz Butin in 1954 with the dissertation Physiologically-ecological studies on the relationship between water resources and photosynthesis in lichens science Mathematics at the Faculty of the University of Bonn to Dr. rer. nat. PhD . He then worked at the Institute for Forest Plant Diseases of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry in Hann , headed by Herbert Zycha . Münden . Butin worked his way into the field of forest pathology and especially forest mycology , where he found an excellent teacher in Zycha, with whom he finally worked at the forestry faculty of the Georg-August University in Göttingen with the text Research on the ecology of some blue fungi on processed Pine wood also qualified as a professor .

In 1969, Heinz Butin was promoted to Scientific Director at the Institute for Forest Plant Diseases. The Forestry Faculty of the University of Göttingen, which Hann. Münden moved to Göttingen and appointed him extraordinary professor . In 1976 he was appointed Director and Professor Head of the Institute for Plant Protection in the Forest of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry in Braunschweig, but still held forest pathology lectures in Göttingen as part of his training in forest protection .

Jointly issued with Herbert Zycha Butin 1973, the textbook Forest Pathology that but never had the popularity of Fritz Schwerdtfeger The forest diseases gained, but also put other priorities. His most successful book, which made him known internationally through various translations, is Diseases of Forest and Park Trees , which was first published in 1983 and had four editions by 2011. In the course of the debate about the so-called " forest dying ", Butin wrote the color atlas forest damage (1988) together with Günter Hartmann and Franz Nienhaus , a richly illustrated field guide for the diagnosis of tree diseases. The book was not only widely used by forest students and practitioners in this field, but also by other nature lovers who were concerned about the forest. The work has also been translated into several other languages, as has the color atlas Wood Diseases: Ornamental Shrubs and Park Trees (1992), which Butin wrote together with Franz Nienhaus and Bernd Böhmer. However, this book is no longer aimed at foresters and forest owners, but primarily at gardeners and gardening enthusiasts.

In addition, Butin has published numerous articles in national and international phytopathological journals.

In honor of Butin's 85th birthday, a work on the spruce parasitic fungus Rhizoctonia butinii was dedicated to him in 2013 .

He is a member of the German Society for Mycology (DGfM) .

Butin lives in Wolfenbüttel .
