The diocese Long Xuyên was on November 24, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Venerabilium Nostrorum from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Cần Thơ and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City as a suffragan .
