Long Xuyên is a city in An Giang Province in Vietnam . It is part of the Mekong Delta . The city is about 1,950 km south of Hanoi , 189 km from Ho Chi Minh City and 45 km from the Cambodian border. In the 2009 census, the population of the city center was 245,699 (1999 census: 191,456). The district-free city of Long Xuyên had a population of 278,658 in 2009. The city forms the capital of An Giang Province. The city is divided into 13 municipalities and has the status of a provincial city of the 2nd class. It has had town charter since 1999.

economy

Long Xuyên is a very developed town in trade (mainly rice) and in the processing fish industry ( basafish ) with more than six processing plants and 10,000 workers. Besides Cần Thơ , the city is the most important economic center in Southwest Vietnam.

education

Long Xuyên is home to An Giang University and Long Xuyên Teacher's Training College . An Giang University is the second largest university in the Mekong Delta. It has more than 8,000 students and started out as a teaching college. It has had university status since 2000.

religion

Long Xuyên is the center of the Hòa Hảo , a sect of Buddhism . There are also many Catholic churches in the city.
