Pangasius bocourti , sometimes Basa after the Vietnamese name of the animal, is a species of fish from the genus Pangasius within the shark catfish family. The species occurs in the river systems of the Mekong and Mae Nam Chao Phraya in Cambodia , Laos , Vietnam and Thailand and is a popular food fish there , which is alsodrawnin aquaculture .
features
Pangasius bocourti is a strongly built fish with a bluish-black back. The head is wider than long and rounded with a blunt-rounded snout, which has a wide, white band around the mouth. There is only one group of teeth on each side of the jaw on the ploughshare bone and one on the palatine bone . The species reaches a body length of up to 120 cm. The anal fin has 31 to 35 soft rays.
Way of life
Pangasius bocourti inhabits large rivers and can be found here in both fast and slow-flowing sections. Mainly plant material is used as food, but arthropods, mollusks and fish are also eaten. The eggs are laid at the beginning of the flood period, after which the old fish migrate into the flooded areas.
