Joseph Tran Van Toan

Joseph Tran Văn Toan (born April 7, 1955 in Thái Bình , Thái Bình Province , Vietnam ) is a Vietnamese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Long Xuyên . His name combines western name tradition ( Joseph as a first name before the surname Tran ) with a Vietnamese ( Văn Toan as a personal name is behind the surname).

Life

Joseph Tran Văn Toan received his training from 1966 to 1974 in the boys' seminary and from 1974 to 1981 in the seminary of the diocese Long Xuyên. Since the communist government refused to allow him to be ordained a priest , he worked as a layperson in a parish for eleven years. It was not until January 16, 1992 that he was able to receive the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Long Xuyên.

After pastoral work, he studied at De La Salle University in Manila from 2000 to 2005 and received his doctorate in education . He then worked in the formation of priests.

On April 5, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him titular bishop of Acalissus and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Long Xuyên . He was ordained episcopal on May 29th of the same year by the Bishop of Long Xuyên, Joseph Trân Xuân Tiéu . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Cần Thơ , Stephanus Tri Buu Thien , and the Bishop of Phan Thiết , Joseph Vu Duy Thông .

On August 25, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Long Xuyên. With the resignation of Joseph Trân Xuân Tiéu on February 23, 2019, he succeeded him as Bishop of Long Xuyên.
