history

The Archdiocese of Hanoi was established in 1659 by Pope Alexander VII - formally from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Macau - as the Apostolic Vicariate of Tonking (Latin: Ton-Kin ). On July 24, 1678 the Vicariate Apostolic Tonking was divided into the Vicariate Apostolic Osttonking and Westtonking ( Ton-Kin Occidentalis ). On December 3, 1924, the name was changed to Apostolic Vicariate Hanoi . This was in turn on November 24, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Venerabilium Nostrorum raised to the archbishopric.

Since 1976 all archbishops of Hanoi have been created as cardinals , so that Hanoi is traditionally a bishopric with the dignity of cardinals.
