The Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City ( Latin Archidioecesis Hochiminhopolitana , Vietnamese Tổng giáo phận Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese in Vietnam .
history
The forerunner of the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City emerged on March 2, 1844 as the Apostolic Vicariate West Cochin from the division of the Apostolic Vicariate Cochin . This changed its name on December 3, 1924 in the Apostolic Vicariate Saigon and was on November 24, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Venerabilium Nostrorum raised to the archdiocese. On October 14, 1965, the archbishopric ceded part of its territory to establish the Phú Cường diocese , before it underwent the most recent name change on November 23, 1976.
