Jean-Baptiste Cardinal Phạm Minh Mẫn (born March 5, 1934 in Cà Mau , Vietnam ) is a Vietnamese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City .

Life

Jean-Baptiste Phạm Minh Mẫn received the sacrament of ordination on May 25, 1965 after studying Catholic theology . He then worked in various offices in the training of priests, including many years in the underground . After the political situation eased and some seminars were reopened, in the absence of qualified theologians, he also took on teaching duties.

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop of Mỹ Tho on March 22, 1993 . The bishop of Cn Thơ , Emmanuel Lê Phong Thuân , donated him episcopal consecration on August 11 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Đà Nẵng , François Xavier Nguyên Quang Sách , and the coadjutor bishop of Bắc Ninh , Joseph Marie Nguyên Quang Tuyên .

On March 1, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh and accepted him on October 21, 2003 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giustino in the College of Cardinals .

Cardinal Mẫn arrived on March 7, 2013 as the last of the 115 cardinals entitled to vote to the conclave in Rome.

On September 28, 2013, Pope Francis Paul Bùi Van Ðoc , previously Bishop of My Tho, gave him his support as coadjutor archbishop. On March 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation, whereupon Paul Bùi Van Ðoc succeeded him.
