Paul Bùi Van Ðoc ( Vietnamese : Phaolô Bùi Văn Đọc ; born November 11, 1944 in Đà Lạt ; † March 6, 2018 in Rome ) was a Vietnamese clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City .

Life

Paul Bùi Van Ðoc studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in Saigon (1956–1963) and at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. He received in the December 17, 1970 Da Lat , the ordination . In 1975 he became rector of the Minh Hoá seminary . In 1995 he was appointed vicar general of the diocese of Đà .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Mỹ Tho on March 26, 1999 . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City , Jean-Baptiste Phạm Minh Mẫn , on May 20 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Barthélémy Nguyễn Sơn Lâm PSS , Bishop of Thanh Hóa , and Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn , Bishop of Đà Lạt .

Pope Francis appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Jean-Baptiste Cardinal Phạm Minh Mẫn, Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City, on September 28, 2013 . After his resignation on March 22, 2014, he succeeded him.

He died of a stroke in Rome, where he was staying during the ad limina visit of the Vietnamese bishops.
