Live and act

Fred Klingauf spent his youth and school days in Fürstenwalde. After graduating from high school in 1954 and 1955, he trained as a technical college lecturer in agriculture in Semper / Rügen and Seelow / Mark. From 1955 to 1956 he worked as a teacher at the Fürstenwalde agricultural college. From 1956 to 1958 Fred Klingauf studied agriculture at the Berlin School of Economics .

In 1959 he continued his studies at the University of Bonn with the subjects philosophy, zoology, botany, chemistry and plant diseases. With the dissertation "Defense and avoidance reactions of aphids (Aphididae) under threat from predators and parasites" as well as the examination subjects zoology, botany and plant diseases, he was awarded a doctorate in 1966. rer. nat. PhD. After submitting the habilitation thesis "The host choice of aphids (Aphididae) and the stimuli controlling the selection behavior with special consideration of the plant surface and its wax coating", Klingauf became the venia legendi for the subject area "Phytomedicine with special consideration of entomology" by the agricultural faculty of the university Bonn in June 1973.

After several years of assistant work at the Institute for Plant Diseases of the University of Bonn, Klingauf was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor in 1976. At the same time, he was entrusted with the management of the Entomology and Plant Protection Department and in October 1979 he was appointed managing director of the institute.

On the l. In August 1980, following an appointment procedure by the Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Forests (BML), he was appointed director and professor and entrusted with the management of the Institute for Biological Pest Control of the BBA in Darmstadt. He continued teaching at the University of Bonn there even after moving to the BBA, until 1982 when he was re-qualified at TH Darmstadt . On August 30, 1982 he was appointed honorary professor in the biology department of the Technical University of Darmstadt.

After another appeal procedure, Fred Klingauf has, with effect from l. July 1988 assumed the role of President of the BBA. On September 2, 1988, he was appointed President and Professor. At the end of August 2001, Fred Klingauf resigned from active service as President of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA), and Georg F. Backhaus was appointed as his successor .

Appreciation

For 21 years, President Klingauf stood up for the well-being of the Federal Biological Institute with the greatest commitment and passion. As president he faced tasks that were not yet foreseeable when he was appointed, such as the reunification of Germany. With negotiating skills, he managed to bring together considerable parts of the state plant protection from both parts of Germany in the BBA.

His scientific achievements received great recognition in both national and international specialist circles. For many years he worked for the German Research Foundation as an expert reviewer in the field of phytomedicine and in the plant protection product commission. As an expert in questions of biological and integrated pest management, Fred Klingauf supervised crop protection projects in many countries around the world.

For example, in February 2001 Fred Klingauf was awarded the “Department Distinction Silver Medal” by the Slovak government for the good technical cooperation between the two countries in the field of plant protection.

A goal that was particularly close to Fred Klingauf's heart was the promotion of young scientists. Before he left, he was in charge of 47 diploma theses and led 44 doctoral students to obtain doctorates.
