Otto Appel commemorative coin

The Otto Appel Memorial Coin was donated in honor of the phytomedicist Otto Appel on the occasion of his 85th birthday. The commemorative coin is considered one of the highest awards for personalities of the European plant protection service .

The history

On the initiative of Friedrich Wilhelm Maier-Bode , leading members of German plant protection met in the Ministry of Agriculture in Bonn in 1952 with the aim of creating an award for outstanding phytomedicists. The corresponding Otto Appel medal has been awarded since 1952, most recently every two years. According to the statutes, the responsible institution is the Julius Kühn Institute and its respective president, who acts as patron of the award.
