Johanna Westerdijk (born January 4, 1883 in Nieuwer-Amstel , † November 15, 1961 in Baarn ) was a Dutch botanist and professor of phytopathology at the University of Utrecht . Its botanical abbreviation is “ Westerd. ".

Life

Johanna Westerdijk was born to Bernard Westerdijk and Aleida Catharina Scheffer. She studied in Amsterdam with Hugo de Vries , where she completed her studies in botany and zoology in 1904. She then conducted research in Munich with the botanist Karl Ritter von Goebel on liverworts and received her doctorate in 1906 in Zurich with Hans Schinz on mosses.

At the age of 23, she succeeded Jan Ritzema Bos in 1906 as director of the Willie Commelin Scholten phytopathological laboratory and held this position until 1952. From 1913 Westerdijk went on study trips to the Dutch East Indies, Japan, the USA, Portugal and South Africa. In 1917 she was appointed associate professor of phytopathology at the University of Utrecht, becoming the first female professor in the Netherlands. In 1930 she also became an associate professor of phytopathology at the University of Amsterdam .

Westerdijk has done a lot of research on Dutch elm disease . It showed that the fungus Ceratocystis ulmi caused the death of the elm.
