Georg F. Backhaus

Georg Friedrich Backhaus (* 1955 in Freienhagen , Hessen ) is a German agricultural scientist specializing in horticulture and phytomedicine . He was President of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA) from 2002–2008 and President of the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI ) with headquarters in Quedlinburg .

Live and act

After graduating from the old state school in Korbach in 1973, first studied biology and social sciences at the comprehensive university in Kassel . After completing military service, studied horticulture at the University of Hanover (1975–1980). After graduating as a qualified agricultural engineer, Backhaus worked as a research assistant and doctoral candidate at the Institute for Plant Diseases and Plant Protection at the same university. With his dissertation: Investigations into the use of endotrophic (VA) mycorrhiza in horticultural plant production , he was awarded a Dr. rer. hoard. PhD. The doctoral supervisor was Fritz Schönbeck. After a scientific assignment abroad as a post-doc at the Institute for Forest Mycology and Pathology at the Swedish Agricultural University Uppsala , he completed a legal clerkship at the State Plant Protection Office of Rhineland-Palatinate and graduated with the 2nd state examination.

In 1986 Backhaus took over the management of the plant protection department in horticulture at the Weser-Ems Chamber of Agriculture . In 1993 he moved to the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry in Braunschweig, where he became director and professor of the Institute for Plant Protection in Horticulture. He was appointed President of the Federal Biological Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry (BBA) in Braunschweig in 2002. After the reorganization and amalgamation of various federal research institutes, Backhaus was appointed President and Professor of the Julius Kühn Institute in 2008. Frank Ordon has been Vice President of the JKI since 2016 . At the end of 2018, Backhaus retired as President of the JKI, his successor as President of the JKI was Frank Ordon.

Backhaus was awarded the Otto Appel Memorial Coin for 2020 .
