Ernst Albert Gäumann (born October 6, 1893 in Lyss , Canton Bern , Switzerland ; † December 5, 1963 in Zurich ) was a Swiss botanist , mycologist , phytopathologist and university professor. Its botanical author's abbreviation is “ Gäum. ".

Life

After finishing school in Bern, Ernst Gäumann studied botany from 1912 at the University of Bern , where he was awarded a doctorate by Eduard Fischer in 1917 with a thesis on the forms of Peronospora parasitica , a type of mildew . phil. PhD.

After subsequent studies in Sweden at Uppsala University , in North America and in Indonesia , where he headed an agricultural research facility with a plant pathology laboratory, Gäumann worked at the Agricultural Research Institute in Oerlikon from 1922 to 1927 . This was followed by his habilitation at the ETH Zurich .

In 1927 Gäumann was appointed full professor of special botany at the ETH Zurich. Shortly after his appointment, he fell ill with a polio-like disease, the consequences of which he never fully overcame.

Gäumann dealt in particular with questions of plant pathology, whereby his interest was mainly in the clarification of the infection process and the possibilities of defense against infection by the plant. He was a member of the Zurich Masonic Lodge Modestia cum Libertate .

Gäumann was married twice.

  • November 1931 with Doris Nanette Wild , with whom he had a son Niklaus Gäumann (* 1937).
